Glenn Lester Bohanan, 84, of Contoocook, New Hampshire, passed away at his home on March 24, 2026. He was born in Concord, New Hampshire, on August 6, 1941, the son of Ivan and Priscilla (Pleadwell) Bohanan. He grew up on the family's dairy farm in Contoocook.
Glenn graduated from Hopkinton High School in 1959, where he served as class president and was known as a brilliant student and a great athlete. He attended the Thompson School at the University of New Hampshire, where he studied applied dairy sciences. There, he met Adele Foster, who was studying horticulture and animal husbandry. Shortly thereafter, they were married near her family's horse farm in Plainfield, New Hampshire. They were married for 62 years, until her death in 2025. Together, they raised four children on Bohanan Farm.
Known for his tireless work ethic, Glenn worked the farm his entire life. During a time of great technological change, he adapted readily and remained curious and eager to learn. He was active in a number of agricultural organizations, including serving as president of the Merrimack County Farm Bureau and Granite State Dairy Promotion. He also contributed to his community in many ways, including service on the Hopkinton Planning Board.
Glenn was an avid birdwatcher and loved hiking, camping, kayaking, and spending time in the natural world. He was also a devoted Red Sox fan. He played townie softball for many years and was known for his speed around the bases. He enjoyed woodworking, often gifting his creations to family and friends, and had a deep appreciation for practical solutions and the thrifty re-use of materials. This time of year would often find him in the sap house, making maple syrup.
Glenn was a man of few words, but he always seemed to know the right thing to say in every situation life presented. He radiated stoic strength, yet could always make those around him laugh with his quick wit and dry sarcasm. He led by example through quiet presence and patience. He would allow you to make a mistake so you could learn the lesson, while always being there to share his experience so you would not make it twice, and so it could become a story later told for comedic effect. His outlook on life left those around him feeling confident that they could handle almost any situation with a smile and a lesson that would stay with them when it was needed most.
The knowledge Glenn passed on had a lasting impact on his family, as well as on the many employees he mentored over his lifetime.
He understood the joy and importance of travel and took every opportunity to venture beyond his small corner of the world to see more of it. On a hike, he always chose the loop trail, preferring not to return the same way he came.
Glenn was predeceased by his wife, Adele, and his son, Rory. He is survived by his children, Sarah, Heather (m. James Robertson), and Monte (m. Sarah Launchbury-Bohanan); his grandchildren, Michelle Fitzgerald, Kirk Bohanan, Sean Bohanan, Meagan Wilson, Josiah Robertson, Nathan Robertson, Abraham Robertson, Elias Bohanan, and Creek Bohanan; many great-grandchildren; his sister, Joline Kimball; and his brother, Craig Bohanan (m. Santina LaCava); along with many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Visitation for family and friends will be held at Holt-Woodbury Funeral Home, 32 School Street, Hillsborough, New Hampshire, on Sunday, April 12, from 2 to 4 pm. A private family ceremony will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Glenn's name may be made to the New Hampshire Audubon Society or the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests.
