Barbara Ann Scarpino passed away at the age of 75 on Sunday, January 11, 2026, with her
husband of 51 years by her side.
Barbara was born November 6, 1950, in Queens, NY to Eugene and Aune Laine. The family
lived in the Metro New York area until moving to northeastern Connecticut.
Barbara graduated from Killingly High School in Danielson and then, Cum Laude, from
(what was) Eastern Connecticut State College in 1974. While in college, she met her future
husband, Paul, and they married soon after graduation, on June 8, 1974.
They first resided in Waterbury Connecticut, where, in 1976, their son Christopher was
born. A year later, they moved to New Hampshire and welcomed their daughter, Kathryn.
Barbara stayed at home with her children until they were in elementary school. She and
Paul purchased land in Sutton and, there, built the house where they would raise their
children and where Barbara would spend the rest of her days.
The children in school, Barbara began her career in the office of Warner Wood Products,
and then went to Bank East, where she worked her way up to Co-branch Manager. She
would often say that one of her favorite roles in that position was helping people in the
community.
Following the closure of the branch, she went to work in the HR department of Warner
Power, eventually assuming the role of HR Manager, where she again took great fulfillment
in helping people with unique problems to find solutions. Barbara also found joy in
volunteering for various organizations in the greater Warner area, especially at the annual
Warner Fall Foliage Festival, as an ESL tutor for immigrant families, and at the Kearsarge
Regional High School Drama club, where, for many years, she lovingly made costumes for
the Fall and Spring plays.
Barbara was an avid reader and loved to both sew and cross stitch. She also found great joy
in cooking for family and friends-a favorite of hers was to have all the children come to the
house for chicken stew and dumplings after the Warner Fall Foliage Parade. Another, more
recent, favorite was traveling to Vermont to attend the annual family summer picnic.
Having others around her, especially family, was a very special joy that Barbara treasured.
Barbara passed away due to complications resulting from a serious stroke suffered August
of 2015. She is survived by her husband Paul, daughter Kate Blish, son in law Spencer
Blish, her treasured granddaughter Isla, sister Liisa Laine and her partner Glenn Casavant,
brother Robert Laine and his wife Mary, brother Raymond Laine, brother and sister in laws
Ralph and Shirely Scarpino, Phil and Ginny Scarpino, as well as her many nieces, nephews,
and great nieces and nephews. She is pre-deceased by her parents, Aune and Eugene
Laine, her in-laws Vincent and Pearl Scarpino and her beloved son, Christopher.
The family wishes to thank the Granite VNA, for all their support and help caring for
Barbara, as well as the Sutton Fire department ambulance service. Arrangements were
entrusted to the Holt-Woodbury funeral home in Hillsboro, NH and a private family
