Kathleen Joann Daniels

Deering, NH Kathleen “Kay” Daniels passed away February 7, 2025. Kay Daniels, 86, was quick to say that she was born at the time of The Great New England Hurricane of 1938, one of the most destructive and powerful hurricanes in recorded history. She grew up on her parent’s large farm, with very competitive parents who each had their own separate, enormous vegetable and flower gardens. They competed for the best in every category- every vegetable and every flower- from cucumber to dahlia. It was through them that Kay learned a great work ethic, respect for the beauty of the earth, how to stay humble although a Scrabble champion, how to sew like nobody’s business, to paint, quilt, read music and an enduring love for family. She attended the Deering Community Church her entire life. Each church member, and especially the Summer Faire team, where her “quilt of the year” would be raffled, will hold a place in her heart forever. Always the academic, in high school she took Latin, because it holds the root to all medical terms-- to prepare her for her chosen vocation: nursing. In her senior year of nursing school, she eloped on Valentine’s Day with Ray Daniels. At family gatherings it was the joking banter between them as to whether this was a “specifically chosen day“--or--if it was “just a day that he wasn’t plowing snow.” While Ray and Kay were raising their 3 children: David, Rob and Kathy--Kay worked as the school nurse and then as a nurse in the Hillsboro House Nursing Home. She also taught quilting, embroidery and crewel. Kay had to have the “big block” calendar, as she was a member of so many clubs - the Bird & Garden Club, Cooperative Extension, ABC (At-Risk Babies & Children’s) Quilts, Deering Women’s Guild, Deering Church Choir, and the Mahjong Club. Like her parents, Kay was very competitive and loved the saying “whoever dies with the most fabric – wins!” You are welcome at her Celebration of Life service at her beloved Deering Community Church, 763 Deering Center Road, Route 149, Deering, NH on Sunday, Feb. 23 at 1 PM.
