Contoocook, NH
Priscilla Bohanan,
longtime resident of Contoocook, passed away peacefully at the Pleasant View
Nursing Home on Friday January 27, 2012 at the age of 97 and in the company
of family.
She was born Priscilla Thankful Pleadwell in Wollaston MA on December 8,
1914. The third (and last surviving member) of a family of 6 children, she
grew up in greater Boston and summered in Ellisville MA on longtime family
property -- an idyllic cottage positioned on a bluff high above Buzzards
Bay.
Following high school graduation Priscilla worked in Boston for the John
Hancock Life Insurance Company. In 1938 she married Ivan Bohanan and moved
to the Bohanan Farm in Contoocook NH. Adapting well to country living, she
was up with the sun to tend her extensive vegetable and flower gardens. The
gardens were meant for sharing; it was simply not possible to leave
Priscilla’s home without a few ears of corn, or a couple of tomatoes, or
some small plant in a clump of dirt in a paper bag.
Quiet contributions to charity were integral to her day-to-day life.
Priscilla frequently donated perennial garden plants to local fund raising
causes. She was also involved in the production of over 1000 ABC quilts.
Apart from her much admired farm gardens, Priscilla worked at local
greenhouses and ran Ginger & Pickles, a mail order business of Tasha Tudor’s
products.
Priscilla was a longtime member of the First Congregational Church of
Hopkinton, and of the Hopkinton Antiquarian Society. She is predeceased by
her husband of 67 years and leaves a daughter, Joline Kimball of Webster,
son Glenn and daughter-in-law Adelemarie of Contoocook, and son Craig and
daughter-in-law Santina LaCava also of Contoocook. She also leaves 13
grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, and 4 great great grandchildren.
There will be no formal funeral service, but a family ceremony celebrating
Priscilla’s life will be held this Spring.
The Holt-Woodbury
Funeral Home & Cremation Service is assisting the family.
