Marjorie L Tuttle

CONCORD , NH Marjorie L. Tuttle, 92, died peacefully on Monday, Jan. 17, 2011 at her home at Heritage Heights. Born in Brooklyn, NY on June 22, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Edgar Lowe and Marion Forbes Lowe. Marjorie is survived by her two daughters, Elizabeth Athan and husband Lawrence of Wayland, MA, and Mary Tuttle and husband David Lemonick of Pittsburgh, PA. She is also survived by her four grandchildren, Lawrence and Robert Athan, and Samuel and Sally Lemonick. She was the wife of Lewis C. Tuttle who died in 1995. Raised in England, she graduated from Putney High School and Newnham College of Cambridge University with a degree in Natural Sciences and Geography. From 1939 to 1944 she worked at the office of the Military Attaché at the American Embassy in London. After the war Marge returned to the U.S. and worked at the Dept. of Agriculture in the Soil Conservation Service in Washington, D.C., followed by four years at the Rockefeller Brothers Fund in New York City until her marriage in 1950. She was very active in the Appalachian Mountain Club where she met her future husband. They lived in Cambridge, MA, Tenafly, NJ where she raised her daughters, and Hancock, NH, before they moved to Heritage Heights in 1990. Marge enjoyed hiking and skiing with her family. She was passionate about the environment and spent years advocating for conservation issues, including the reintroduction of wolves to their natural habitat. She was active with the Harris Center in Hancock and then with the Society for the Protection of NH Forests in Concord where she was named Volunteer of the Year in 2000. Burial will be private in the family plot in Antrim.
