Albert Smith Holmes, 89, formerly of Hopkinton, N.H. died peacefully Monday December 19, 2011 at Havenwood-Heritage Heights in Concord, N.H., with his loving wife and family at his side.

Al was born on June 23, 1922 in Madison, Wisconsin, to Albert C. and Rebecca (Smith) Holmes. Al studied German at Beloit College before enlisting in the Army where he served as an interpreter in the European Theatre during World War II.  After being discharged, Al worked for the State Department in the Far East where he met his bride, Era, when he crashed a party.  After returning to the United States, Al graduated from the University of Minnesota and practiced as an architect for many years.  Al was active in the First Congregational Church of Hopkinton, N.H., was an avid gardener and an accomplished bread baker.

Al is survived by his wife of 61 years Era (Kimberley) Holmes, of Concord, NH,  daughter Sarah Holmes of Eliot, ME, son Nicholas Holmes and wife Brigette of Dunbarton, N.H., sister Elizabeth Lowe and husband John of Concord, CA, brother Byron Holmes and wife Betty of Windsor, Wisconsin, and grandchildren Hank and Hillary Holmes of Dunbarton, N.H.
