Gertrude (Butler) McCray
|
Henniker, NH Our mother and grandmother, Gertrude (Butler) McCray, 82, of Henniker, NH, died Thursday, October 14, 2010, at her daughter's home where she had lived for the past five years. Born December 10, 1927, in Philadelphia, PA., she was the daughter of the late George E. and Cora (Williams) Butler. She was also predeceased by her husband William McCray, and her two brothers and two sisters. She graduated from High School in Philadelphia and supplemented her education with numerous workshops and college courses. She worked most of her adult life as a civil servant for the U.S. Government in PA, first for the Veteran's Administration and over twenty years for the Social Security Administration where she received a number of awards for service, including the Commissioner's Citation Award from the Department of Health Education and Welfare of the Social security Administration for leadership displayed as supervisor in directing large numbers of employees. Our mother was a loving, generous, and tireless soul. Despite her demanding job, she was a den mother so that her son and other neighborhood boys could have a Cub Scout experience. She was the family historian, documenting every family reunion, holiday and barbeque. She was also a lifetime member of Pinn Memorial Baptist Church in Philadelphia, PA. She is survived by her son, Evan McCray of East Orange, NJ, and her daughter, Edith Butler of Henniker, NH, a brother, Arnold Butler of Colorado Springs, CO, two grandchildren, Lisa Hallstein Zimmerman of Philadelphia, PA and Amelia Parrish of Henniker, NH, and her great-grandson, Asa Parrish Lamarre of Henniker. Memorial Services will be held at The Pinn Memorial Baptist Church on Saturday, November 13, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. Donations may be made in her name to the CRVNA Home Hospice Care, 30 Pillsbury St. Concord, NH, 03302 or the Pinn Memorial Baptist Church College Scholarship Fund, 2251 No. 54th Street, Philadelphia, PA, 19131.
