Mary Elizabeth Hughes

CONCORD – Mary Elizabeth “Bette” Hughes, 84, passed away Wednesday, March 18, 2009, at the Pleasant View HealthCare Center.

Bette was born in Jamaica Plain, Mass, on September 3, 1924, the daughter of Ernest and Margaret (Laughlin) Hughes.  She moved to Weare, NH in 1960 where she operated a dog grooming business and small farm for many years. 

Bette graduated from Jamaica Plain High School and then went to work for the Angel Memorial Hospital in Boston.  Bette worked with and for the betterment of animals all of her life.  Her hobbies included reading, scrabble, and yoga, and she was known for her love of chocolate.  She also enjoyed music of the Big Band era.

She was a member of the Piscatoquog Land Conservancy, Weare senior exercise group, Weare Senior Women’s Organization, the Weare Historical Society, and was a frequent visitor to the Weare Library.

She was predeceased by her brother Ernest Hughes.  She is survived by two sisters, Frances Kilday of Stoughton, Mass, and Dorothy Commerford of Walpole, Mass, and many nieces and nephews.  She also leaves life-long friendships with Mary E. Hennessey and Jerrianne Ashley, Pat Milliken, and Bertha “Kit” Josselyn.

No calling hours.  A graveside memorial will be held at the South Weare Hillside Cemetery at 11am on Tuesday, May 5, 2009, followed by a light luncheon at the Weare Town Hall.  

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Weare Animal Guardians, P O Box 572, Weare, NH 03281.
