James Joseph (Jim) Wayland Sr.

 

 

James Joseph (Jim) Wayland Sr., 82, died Thursday, June 4, 2009, at home, surrounded by his loving family.

 Jim was born June 5, 1926, in Roxbury, Mass., to William F. Wayland and Rosanna R. (Galligan) Wayland Rufo.  He attended school in Uxbridge and Waltham Mass., completed aviation school and various college courses while in the U.S. Navy and earned a diploma in electronics from DeVry Technical Institute.

 Jim was an extremely intelligent man with many skills and talents.  He could dismantle and repair anything.  His formal career included working for Raytheon Co. and, in the early 1950’s, on Long Island, N.Y., for Sperry Rand on the gyroscope systems for the nautilus, the first submarine to travel under the North Pole.  He later worked as a senior electromechanical engineer for Hewlett-Packard in Waltham, Mass.  After moving to Henniker, with his master electrician and plumber licenses, Jim worked as a general contractor building houses.  He then worked for the Concord school system before his retirement. 

 In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Gerald Wayland of Waltham, Mass., and by his sons, John Donovan Wayland and Patrick Luke Wayland of Henniker.

Survivors include his wife of nearly 57 years, Christine (McFaden) Wayland of Henniker; daughters, Adrian Wayland of Warner, Cheryl Damour (and Michael) of Henniker, and Julia Wayland (and Steve Holdner) of Hillsboro; sons, James Wayland Jr. (and Michelle Burt) of Henniker and Christopher Wayland of Hopkinton; grand-children, Aaron Sterling of Henniker, Damian Whittier of Weare, Asher Henderson of Warner, Alexis Wayland of Deering, Erin Gezelman of New York, Cara Wayland of Hopkinton, Brennan Holdner of Deering and Austin Holdner of Hillsboro; his sister, Ann Velardi of Chelmsford Mass.; two brothers, Andrew Wayland of Littleton, Mass., and William Wayland of Southington Conn.; six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. 

 Calling hours will not be held.

 Private services will be held at a later date.

 In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Concord-Merrimack County SPCA, 130 Washington St., Penacook, N.H. 03301; or to a local food pantry.
